Heh. I'm still using a PC I built with a GTX 1070 and it's still working fine, 8 years later. I may need to upgrade soon, though, for the reasons you mentioned. I'm currently building a budget board for my partner and I hope what I pick lasts just as long. I think I've settled on the RX 7600 but still absorbing info since a lot has changed since my last build.

steam also natively supports linux and has a pretty good compatibility layer (proton) to make games work on linux too. Sure you can use something like wine to run epic games stuff on linux but it probably won't "just work". I haven't had any problems with seam on linux which is more than a good portion of apps I've used on linux can say (looking at you discord)

What the announcer is talking about around 13min mark is what intel refers to as its 'tick tock' CPU development model. Tick is performance and power and tock is improving efficiency while bringing power down. What AMD is doing now fits this model.

So if you compare 5800x3d and 7700x you will see the same, 5800x3d is better at gaming... now the 7700x is cheaper and more effective pr watt. Bro seeing the 1070 out up rx6600 numbers at native and with xess1.3, is kinda bepressing... I know it can be difficult to optimize for the different brands and generations of hardward but ig sucks when a game heavily favors one brand over the other. I remembere playing remnant 2 and seeing people talk about their performance with an rx6650xt and im sitting here with a rtx 2060 super (theoretically an inferior card) and im getting as much if not more fps.

To be honest, AMD themselves started the new CPU campaign with the pretence to raise the power efficiency overall, which they did !!! They just shouldn't try to trick the audience in thinking it's also faster. In the end you get a product that's more efficient to it's previous counterpart but with different goals in mind. For gamers it's all overkill anyhow, any Zen-2 6-core is more then enough for the majority of gamers and you only need more cores if you want to go for 4k gaming or 1440p ultra settings. A Ryzen 5 3600 still does the job perfectly and i myself am using the R7 5800X with great pleasure although it's overkill for many of things i do with it. If you are on a very low budget you can still buy a system that can beats the hell out of modern system regarding gaming. For example, this configuration will give you a 1440p ultra gaming experience for less then 700 euros : - Cpu : R5 3600 - MB : any B450-B550 ultra cheap motherboard will do (yes these were all very good those days !) - Memory : any 2x8 Gb Dram (pref. 3200mhz) - GPU : RTX3070 or RX6700 - PSU : any good 650 watt psu will do This will probably cost around 550-650 so there is room left for other stuff as well then. I do not recommend any latest hardware for budget orientated gamers or for new gamers. Also the stability of the AM4 platform has been proven while AM5 still struggles with a lot of different issues (memory control for example)

I bought a prebuilt PC because I wanted to play cities skylines. PC came with a 4060 and for that particular game it works great. The biggest bottleneck for Cities Skylines is Ram. I upgraded from 32 to 64 GB. But yea, no complaints with the 4060 for me. But i’m a newbie who is only using it for one particular game that doesn’t really push the card too much. At some point i’d potentially like to upgrade it. But that is probably years down the road when I switch over to CS2.

I'm happily using my 4070 Super especially at 4k where i get like 40+fps in most titles with RT on but with FG it's allowing me go get a high refresh rate experience.

I got a 7900 XTX and regret it. The lack of stability is terrible. The first one I had crashed my PC a couple times per day unless I heavily under-clocked it. Then it still crashed weekly at least. I don’t mean game crashes. I mean black-screened my PC, hard reboot type of crash. RMA’ed the card. Still black screens about once per week with stock settings. Some games won’t even launch. Some games crash frequently. To be fair, the RX 580 I bought years ago never seemed to have these issues. It seems specific to the 7000 series. But I’ve had several NVIDIA GPUs and never had a single problem. It “just works.” I will definitely switch to a 5080 when I can.

In all the test against the 3060 it does more fps with less power used. That's what's good about the 4060.

I think no one who buys a 4060 wants to play RT. Otherwise they would be fucking stupid. It was one good thing about it. The energy it needs is low! I would rather have a 4060 Ti then a 3070 Ti even though the 3070 is faster by a little bit but also uses like 140w more power.

Imo we've gotten good enough graphics way back in the day when the first Crysis came out. Sure, at the time it was a horror to run it properly, but now ? It's still looks pretty good and it can run on anything.

I guess the gaming community doesn't mind even higher prices, because that's exactly what's going to happen if nvidia becomes the only option. I'm sure AMD will be making GPUs in the low to mid segment for a while longer at least but at the high end, enjoy your $3000 5090.

Hot graphics sell games and you might wish that weren't true but at the end of the day most developers are just trying to take the easiest path to please their share holders.

People make far too big a deal about CPUs for gaming. I'm going to let you in on a secret. It...doesn't...really...matter. When you're playing a modern game at 1440p or higher resolution, with settings maxed out or optimized for the speed of your GPU, the GPU is the limiting factor, not the CPU. The vast majority of people, regardless of system, are GPU bound. Just open your favorite system monitoring utility while playing a game at the normal settings you play at and take a look at your CPU usage, it's very likely to be less than 50% while your GPU is near 100%. That means your GPU isn't fast enough for your CPU at those settings. The exceptions to this are if you're running a high end GPU with a low end CPU and play at a low resolution (like 1080p). Or if you want the maximum framerate at the expense of visuals. That's when getting a 7800x3d would be greatly beneficial.

Never blame the games, because we'll keep buying expensive graphics cards.

i game on a used 2060, i think it's 6GB. i don't play the latest titles, so vram doesn't matter that much to me. i have a 3060 with 12GB for AI stuff. here, vram matters a lot. tooncrafter requires 24GB so i cannot even run it. the fact that 24GB graphic cards start at almost € 2k for nvidia, while amd has 24GB for just under € 1k. still literally more expensive than the whole PC it's going to run in, but nvidia is just insane. and then they put even less vram in the 4060. i mean, why, nvidia?
